Yet another example of a completely fraudulent DMCA claim. I really hope the EFF picks this one up and exposes the perjury committed by Casio here.

Why did you take the person's identity out? We deserve to know which lawyer is openly lying under oath, so that we can avoid their services forever

@iomintz - it's the driver software that someone used when they added a screen to their calculator for cheating. The screen is very hard to see when turned off.

Casio is probably panicing because the only reason they can charge $150 for a calculator that's 20 years old is because teachers believe it's difficult to cheat on.

The lawyer is claiming that the driver software invokes Casio's software somehow. However, the cheating screen is 100% independent of the calculator; they literally just cut a hole in the device and added a different device. There's no relationship between the stuff in the repo and Casio's software at all.

The lawyer will probably fall back to hiding behind "I didn't know any better." I'm not sure they should be allowed to feign ignorance; they made an affirmative claim under oath in order to threaten someone else and demand changes.

What does the repository in question do?

Basically an arduino or something drives a small LCD hidden in the solar cell window. More info here: https://gizmodo.com/calculator-hacked-for-cheating-includes-a-secret-oled-s-1843314318

How about getting lawyers with an iota of technical knowledge? This is a fraudulent DMCA takedown

@StoneCypher This line of calculators actually ranges $10 to $25.

I agree that it is completely separate. Judging by the youtube video, Neutrino-1 never extracted or reverse engineered any Casio firmware or even electronics. The software is all Neutrino-1's own work, plus Arduino libraries.

This device has no circuit connection anywhere to the calculator -- it could run independently, with the calculator PCB removed, or in any other calculator as long as there is a proper sized hole for the OLED display.

Neutrino-1 says they already filed a DMCA counter-notice. I hope Github puts this back up, and then tells React that, because of their bad-faith perjury here, they won't be able to send any more DMCA takedown notices to Github without apologizing, firing the lawyer involved, and documenting extensive measures to prevent this in the future.

That could be or should be a bad joke.
modding an old Casio calculator, adding some 3rd party components while never doing anything with the calculator code integrity has nothing in common with a software hack of the calculator.
Zealous REACT lawyer team should accept their error and apologize.

They always redact personally identifying information, whether that's an individual making the takedown notice or an attorney.

This is absurd. Is gluing a wristwatch to a Casio calculator also a DMCA violation?

Once again, big corps willfully and uncaringly breaking the law with fraudulent DMCAs, knowing the GitHub repository holder likely doesn't have the funds to face them in court. Utterly disgusting behavior by Casio and REACT. The DMCA needs to be overhauled badly to stop this exploitation, it's a recurring problem, not just on GitHub.

If I ever need a new calculator, it ain't gonna be CASIO. This cements that.
This is such nonsense. What part of putting an open sourced Arduino board and uploading free open source libraries and adding some custom open source code, infringe on Casio's IP now?

This is absurd. Is gluing a wristwatch to a Casio calculator also a DMCA violation?

@pierow2k I set my Casio on fire, thus infringing on Casio's proprietary Halt and Catch fire routines.
(unnecessary note for people who need unnecessary notes. I did not set anything on fire, this is merely a joke)

And on the other side of story you have Texas Instruments that are providing calculator for free to tinkers to hack and overclock.
Well we all know who to choose from now on, don't we?

Don't be too quick to praise Texas Instruments. They've done sketchy DMCAs in the past as well.

@ekv88 Sure they do on their older series. But even the TI-84 CE is receiving a new firmware upgrade that blocks all third party native code. And the newest series, the TI-Nspire, has never had third-party native code support, leaving people to find exploits. The latest OSes (including the only OS that runs on their latest model) don't have public exploits yet, although they're being worked on.
